Auyuittuq National ParkAuyuittuq National Park was established in 1972. It was the first Canadian national park North of the Arctic Circle. 'Auyuittuq' is Inuit for 'the land that never melts. Auyuittuq's 19,707 square kilometres lies almost entirely within the Arctic Circle and the park's landscape has been entirely glacier-formed. The park includes:
The Penny Ice Cap on
Baffin Island in Auyuittuq Park is believed by many to be the birthplace
of the last ice age. The Arctic Circle passes
through the park and is marked by an inukshuk that has been in many a
tourist's photographs. You may see Schwarzenback Falls as you hiking to
Mount Thor. Mount Thor is the largest uninterrupted cliff face in the
world. It is a popular destination for rock climbers.
The peak is at 105 degrees making
and supports a vertical cliff face of nearly 1100 m., the longest in the
world.
